Milligen is an anglicized form of the pre 10th century Gaelic Patronymic Ó Maolagáin, or ‘descendant of Maolagán’, of Irish origin and widely recorded in Scotland, a derivative of maol meaning ‘bald’ or ‘tonsured’ – the medieval Catholic practice of cutting or shaving some or all of the hair on the scalp, as a sign of religious devotion or humility.
